The Apex of Civilization
Pete Milosovich © 2011
The vital structure of the city continues to emerge in the minds eye, destinations unknown, yet vivid from the recollection of memory, a picture, or the intense longing of the traveler to experience all that is new. Through the city we become propelled into the ethos of civilization whether we like it or not. So many become desperate to escape the ‘ugliness’ that looms in the nooks and crannies of a desperate existence, while others revel in the power and the majesty that the city has to offer. These and so many other reasons why continue to emerge where the symbol of human dominance on the planet remains the most pronounced, the most prolific, and the most profitable.
In this digital era human connections, at the apex of a business deal, must still be made face to face. Amongst the shambles of so much recurring construction the city looms ever higher with new marvels and spires dedicated to masses of corporate wealth. Only the churches, once gothic and stretched to new heights of unimaginable diaphanous design, now remain low to the ground, unadorned and often supplanted by stadiums of mass worshipers ready to find god in a vacuum of mediocrity.
By nature and design the city never becomes abandoned for very long, rather it looms ever larger, renewed, revamped, and reconstructed. But the core of this outgrowth resides in the wondrous detail of structures that may have outlived the usefulness only time and wear can alter, but in the mind such elegance continues to linger. These complex linear rhythms of beauty that capture dark niches, deep recesses, and so many other details within the complex urban environment spring eternal from the expressive configurations of Marie Gagnon, devoid of people, but never the rich imprint left behind by a humanity that may have forgotten just how vital the city remains.
Ms. Gagnon’s powerful use of space creates an unyielding sense of depth and structure further emboldened by subdued earth tones, an intricate display of color and texture; decisive strokes that capture the design from broad opaque lines of black to the thinnest array of lines accenting the essential contour of constructed inorganic surfaces. When viewed as a whole the entire structure seems to vibrate with the emotionally charged immediacy of an impassioned blueprint of incredible design…
forever eternalized.
